One of the oldest fair’s in the region, Banbury’s Michaelmas Fair is a town favourite event with roots that go back many generations. Bob Wilson’s funfair features a wide variety of rides and attractions, and has evolved many times first appearing during the 17th Century.
What to Expect:
Fairground favourite food – Candyfloss, hot dogs, burgers and fries… there’s something for everyone’s taste at Michaelmas Fair!
Rides of all shapes and sizes – Michaelmas Fair features dozens of rides and attractions, from playhouses to dodgems and much more besides!
Four nights of fun – Recently extended beyond its traditional 3-night run, enjoy Michaelmas Fair on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday AND Saturday evenings!

Q: Who Organises Michaelmas Fair?
A: This event is delivered entirely by Cherwell Distirct Council.
Q: Does Banbury Town Council Support Organisation of Michaelmas Fair?
A: Banbury Town Council plays no active role in the organisation of Michaelmas Fair. However, it is represented by the Town Mayor on the first night, when whoever is elected into the role carries out the tradition of the ‘Golden Key’.
Q: What is the ‘Golden Key’ and Can I Attend?
A: At the opening of the fair, just after school hours at around 4 pm, the Banbury Town Mayor, together with the Chair of Cherwell District Council, will travel around the fairground with a large golden key. Whichever ride is touched with the key will be free-of-charge for a single ride. Around 10 – 15 rides are usually made free during this time, providing plenty of opportunities for visitors to enjoy a free ride. This is fully accessible to the public, and all are free to attend and enjoy free rides.
