Banbury Town Council is pleased to reveal that the tennis courts at Horton View have been fully resurfaced, part of a comprehensive refurbishment intended to bring the facilities up to a modern standard.
The project means that the playing surface will be greatly improved for longtime players and sporting newcomers alike, enhancing both safety and performance. It has also improved drainage, making the courts far better suited to year-round play.
As well as improved weather resistance, clearer court markings improve both practicality and visual appeal, just in time for the start of the peak season, which runs from mid-spring and throughout the summer. The improvements bring the Horton View courts up to the same standards met by the People’s Park Tennis Courts after their major refurbishment back in 2024.
Tennis has long been popular with Banbury residents, with multiple courts throughout the town. Banbury Town Council owns two sites – one in People’s Park, and the Horton View Sports Ground.
The refurbishment comes just in time for the Banbury Tennis Club Open Day, due to take place on the 25th April. Banbury Tennis Club – which was founded over 50 years ago, in 1973 – organises this yearly event to welcome potential new members to the site and give them an opportunity to learn more about this long-standing group of enthusiasts.
The Town Mayor – Councillor Kieron Mallon – was on site on Monday to open the newly refurbished courts, which stand to benefit not just the general public, but also the Banbury Tennis Club, who use the Horton View courts for matches, casual games, and other events each week.
Of the refurbishment, The Mayor said, “Having worked with the Tennis Club and Banbury Town Council on this project I am proud to formerly open the refurbished courts. Who knows where the next Wimbledon champion will hail from, but if local youngsters have a chance to play on a proper court and part of a recognised club, they will have the best start in a sport that they may enjoy for a lifetime”.
Councillor Shaida Hussain – Leader of Banbury Town Council – said, “This latest project to improve Banbury’s tennis courts reflects the council’s ongoing commitment to modernising sporting facilities. The upgraded courts will provide the community with high-quality spaces to exercise, socialise, and enjoy the outdoors. We are very pleased with the results of this refurbishment and look forward to the public making full use of the facilities during the upcoming peak tennis season.”
Banbury Town Council maintains two tennis courts alongside a number of other sporting facilities, with sport one of the most effective ways to stay physically active, improve coordination, and support mental wellbeing.
Tennis in particular is also a highly social sport, offering opportunities for people of all ages to meet new faces, build friendships, and take part in friendly competition. In addition to casual play and play tennis, you can become a member of Banbury Lawn Tennis Club, providing an opportunity to stay fit and engage in regular tennis activities with like-minded individuals.

The investment in resurfacing represents a commitment to the long-term future of the Horton View facility. By addressing wear and tear and upgrading the court infrastructure, the council has taken important steps to ensure the courts remain playable and well-maintained for years to come. This proactive approach helps to avoid more significant deterioration, protecting the courts as a valuable community asset.
